Perfect Your Carving Technique

Today we’re going to break down the essential elements of carving perfect turns. Whether you’re a beginner looking to progress or an advanced skier refining your technique, these tips will help you lay down those satisfying railroad tracks in the snow.

Body Position

The key to clean carves starts with proper body position:

  1. Stack your shoulders over your hips - Maintain a strong, aligned position
  2. Keep your hands forward - This helps you stay balanced over the center of your skis
  3. Maintain shin pressure on your boots - Consistent pressure keeps your edges engaged
  4. Look ahead, not down - Your body follows your eyes, so look where you want to go

Proper carving stance

Edge Engagement

Getting your edges to bite into the snow properly is critical:

  • Roll your ankles into the turn - Feel both edges engage simultaneously
  • Use progressive edge angle - Start shallow, increase through the turn
  • Pressure the outside ski - About 70% outside, 30% inside for optimal control
  • Finish each turn completely - This sets you up for the next turn

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaning into the hill - This puts you on your inside edges and kills carving
  • Banking turns - Keep your shoulders level with the slope
  • Rushing the transition - Patience between turns creates cleaner arcs
  • Skidding - True carving has no skid, just pure edge engagement

Pro Tips

“Remember: Patience in the transition leads to cleaner carves. The moment between turns is where great carving happens.” - Olympic Ski Coach

Try practicing on gentle, well-groomed slopes first. As you improve, gradually increase the steepness and speed. Record yourself or ski with a friend who can give you feedback on your form.
